However, in recruiting potential suppliers and joint venture partners to get this venture rolling, my colleague and I realized today that there are various structural pieces of a corporate structure that need to be formally written out for other team members to see before committing to joining the journey of developing the larger venture concept.
The same is true in the story ‘The tortoise & the hare’: the tortoise took his time and went ‘slow & steady’ – the pace he was comfortable going; whereas the hare took off and ran out of steam before he completed the race.

So it is in everyday business life too: it pays to take projects one step at a time, and make sure all of the foundational pieces are firmly in place before telling too many people about the idea. Not only from a standpoint of risking someone copying your idea, but also from the standpoint that you need to have the business idea at a point where it is ready to sustain any clients the marketing & sales processes bring.

What do I mean?

Think back to when you were a child and you mom (or dad) used to say to you “you have too much in your mouth. You’re going to choke!” Well, that same concept of having too much to do at one time in your business – also known in some circles as “having too much on your plate” – can actually hinder the progress of your business growth and potentially jeopardize the relationships you have already built. It has become an important point at the forefront of Passionate Web Creations this week as we start rebranding to the name of Ideal Visitor (website is to be www.idealvisitor.com) to only take on what each of us can manage in a day or a week; to not expect more of the team than is practical.

Furthermore, if a team member finds him- or herself overwhelmed with tasks, to chunk things down into bite-sized pieces that are easier to complete, so that person doesn’t become overwhelmed. But most importantly, if you have a lot to do at one time, recognise that we’re all ‘only human’ and can only do so much in a given timeframe; that some things take longer than others to complete, and to build in ‘room for error’ (because there are few – if any – tasks that go 100% perfect all the time!).

Finally – and probably most importantly – if you find yourself overwhelmed with things to do and deadlines looming, take one of the following options into consideration before burning yourself out or giving up completely:

• tell someone about the mess-up; they may be angry at first, but may give you some leeway in other areas if you can show you’re trying to fix what you messed up
• ask other team members for help; they may be able to help you complete the work or have an idea of how to get things done quicker. They may even know of someone that can help you complete the task on time!

So remember: if you feel like you have too much on your plate and just want to scream or give up, reach out and talk to someone. That person may have an idea of how to solve the problem at hand!

I’ve been trying to help a client to prevent a big lawsuit, due to alleged claims regarding usage of images from this particular company without record of payment. This brings me to my topic for the week: when you get your website designed (or redesigned) be sure to ask your IT professional (or whomever is doing the updates or redesign for you) to give you proof of payment for any external images you use, whether they are templates, photographs, or other external images.

You don’t want to end up like my client – blindsided with a potential lawsuit on your hands!

Social media is the big thing right now, what with so much of marketing efforts going online due to the relative ease of use and low associated costs relative to other mass marketing media available today. As a result, a lot of my clients (both current and prospective) have been asking me about how to get rolling with social media to build business. As a result, today’s note is centered around how to get started with social media.

Top 5 tips to starting social media relationships:
1. figure out which social media portals/websites will bring you the best return for your time investment
2. Sign up for the appropriate social media.
3. Find out who in your current business & social circles are already signed onto those social media tools & connect with them
4. start searching for other people who can become associates, alliances, or clients
5. once you have found people who fit into a category from #4, connect with them and ask a little bit about them (i.e. start a new business relationship).

Tip: Don’t feel obligated to keep the communications confined within the social media tools. It is perfectly acceptable to have an initial introduction via a social media tool (e.g. facebook or linkedin) and then continue communications via phone, business email or skype.

Tonight, I fumbled through my first radio interview – on WDYK-FM 100.5 in Cumberland, MD (a recording of it will be available as soon as I can get hold of it!). What a mess it was! BUT, it was also a HUGE learning experience for me.

“How was it a learning experience?” you may be asking. In various ways: 1. I learned how to listen to a radio host; 2. I learned how I can better prepare for a radio show; 3. I learned to seal myself off from the chaos of life to focus solely on the radio show for a few minutes; 4. I learned how to answer politely, honestly and truthfully, regardless of how it may make me feel.

But most of all, I realised that I can be helpful to others while learning – a concept that has been foreign to me for many many years.
